Red Bull does it again! The past week, Downtown Tampa and the Garrison Channel at the Tampa Convention Center has yet again, been transformed into another extreme amusement spectacle. This time, a unique cable park to host 40 of the world’s top wakeboarders!

Red Bull Wake Open - Raphael Derome

With approximately 25,000 spectators revved up on Red Bull, the metropolitan area shared a resemblance to what I can only describe as an active, modern day Colosseum. In the center, a unique obstacle course powered by a state of the art AND environmentally friendly cable system, the Sesitec System 2.0, which towed the worlds best at a constant speed of 38 m.p.h..

Throughout the three day event, the riders were challenged to compete under three categories of competition: Boat, Big Air, and Park. The Boat competition featured a 22-foot Malibu Wakesetter MXZ, and showcased an innovative, rider-influenced format. Harley Clifford (@harleyclifford ) came away with 1st place for the boat competition. Friday and Saturday, Red Bull’s very own Raphael Derome landed (literally) in First place for both the Big Air, and Park competitions. These challenges incorporated a 50-foot ramp, kickers, rails, and quarter pipes. It was extremely impressive to watch these riders at their best!

One of my favorite parts in this entire competetion, aside from the amazing tricks that were being performed in the water, was the inclusion of artwork done on wakeboards by Tampa locals. The boards were entered into a contest not only to be ranked top three by judges, but also a peoples choice award as well. The final pieces were then given to the wake boarding finalists after being judged in three categories. Some of the work on these boards featured elaborate work such as our very own Tampa Bay Lightning hockey team and boards with extremities such as arms, a tongue, and even a parrot extending from the board!

Local artists compete to have their artwork rank top 3.

The Red Bull Wake Open was part of the Red Bull Signature Series, which is a collection of extreme, progressive events. We are very thankful to have had the opportunity to experience another one of Red Bull’s amazing events.
